As a foreign seller of hotel ware, There are many clients who ask me what is the difference between ceramic&porcelain?what is bone china? which is better to use? and I have thought and find answer for a long time, Could anybody lend me a hand?

The most general of the terms “ceramic” applies to minerals dug from the earth, mixed in various formulas with water and sometimes organic materials, shaped, decorated, usually glazed, and heated to a durable hardness. The different terms within the category such as “pottery”, “porcelain”, “earthenware”, “bone china”, etc. all represent the standard formulas, and have come to popularly represent quality grades.

HI Lucy, Your explanation is perfect, yes, there are various formulas of the dinnerware which named by different word.
but what is the exact meaning of porcelain? what is the difference between ceramic and porcelain? hope we can explore more.

From my experience porcelain is the term currently being used to refer to the highest quality ceramics. and it is usually very delicate. what impressed me most is its sounds and color, elegant shapes and ivory white color, bring people warm and comfortable feeling.

“the most significant identifying factor for porcelain is it’s translucence. You can see a shadow of your finger through it if you hold it up to the light. If porcelain is very heavy, the shadow will be very faint, but it should be visible. All other ceramics are opaque and do not transmit light.”

Thanks Carlos, this kind of porcelain is also called bone china, in China Market main current is magnesium porcelain, Strengthen Porcelain, Bone China. bone china is too expensive to daily use, they are mostly used in the luxury places,
Real bone china need firing twice, contain more than 30% bone powder, animal bone, so supplier now research a new formula to make a lower bone powder porcelain, price is similar as the magnesium porcelain, quality even better for hotel and restaurant use, and now more and more people know bone porcelain and accept its good quality performance, it become a trend for China suppliers and for the world buyers now.

“China, in this context, originally refereed to a ceramic dinnerware coming out of the country ofChinawhich was particularly fine and exceptionally white. It was a standard of quality unknown elsewhere at the time. The mineral Kaolin was used to achieve this look. Many of the different European formulas developed in an attempt to match it. This watered down the term, which now refers to any high quality, natural material (as opposed to man made) ceramic, dinnerware or otherwise.”

HI Jimmy, it is really interesting for this idea, if searching the history we can know that in Han dynasty Chinese people begin to produce ceramic, in the Tang Dynasty, ceramic become famous and largely export to Europe countries, before 18 centuries,European still cannot produce ceramic, they feel it is honored if get one .people then call it “china”, cause they are from China. but there is also many other opinions for china, anyway for us it is really not important when we buy porcelain.

and nowChinais still a main export country in the world, I hope my website can take you to know more of them,
